LOGORAMA: 4 CURIOUS FACTS ABOUT CAGLIARI'S EMBLEM

If there's someone who's been continuously in the headlines of many sports newspapers, it is Massimo Cellino.
The Italian is the president of Cagliari Football Club, and according to the latest news he might well become the boss of Leeds United after all.
With Cellino willing to take the reins of the English team, fans of Cagliari in Italy are left wondering what will become of their beloved team.
Seeing that Cagliari's future is anything but certain, let's have a look at the team's past history.

Like I do every Tuesday, I'll talk about the most interesting logos in football.
Today "LOGORAMA" takes on….CAGLIARI.

What secrets are there in Cagliari's logo to be revealed? I took a look at 4 of the most fascinating details.

1)THE DATE
Cagliari Football Club was founded on the 30th of May 1920 by a surgeon, Gaetano Fichera.
However, there's earlier evidence of football practice: in 1902 a group of local students took on some sailors who had come from Genoa. The match took place in a flooded square, with a "not-so-sferic" leather ball and using trees as goal posts.
You have to hand it to them, Cagliari has come a long way since then. As a matter of fact, they have been the first team based in the Italian geographic area called "the Mezzogiorno" to conquer silverware in the Serie A (1969-1970).

2)THE COLOURS
Cagliari is historically known for their red and blue jerseys
Less known was that in the early years, their players competed in blue and black.
It was only in 1927 that they switched to their present colour combination.
How these two came together, is anything but clear. The most fascinating story is that the origins go back to the union of the Sardinian Reign with Piemonte: the blue came from the ruling family, the Savoia dynasty, whereas red was Piemonte's iconic colour.

3)THE 4 MEN
At the centre of the logo, there are four faces divided by a red cross, considered to be the cross of St.George.
The image goes back to the Middle Ages, and represents the 4 Saracenic kings who were defeated by the Aragona family in the city of Alcoraz, in Spain
The quartet also appears on Sardinia's official flag. What's more interesting, is that if on the flag the four men are looking right and have a blindfold on their forehead, in the football's logo they are looking left and are, in reality, blindfolded.

4)THE NICKNAME
Cagliari is also called "Casteddu", which means "Castle" in the local dialect and was once the official name of the city.
It refers to the stronghold located in the upper part of the surrounding area.
