WHAT IT MEANS BEING THE BEST: THE PFA AWARDS

T
oday the PFA Player of the Year shortlist has been published. The six footballers in the running are Steven Gerrard, Eden Hazard, Adam Lallana, Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suárez and Yaya Touré.

Four clubs are represented (Liverpool with 3 nominations, whereas Chelsea, Manchester City and Southampton each have 1), and England is the nation with the most nominees (3, compared to 1 for Belgium, Uruguay and The Ivory Coast).

4 out of 6 are new nominees, when we compare the shortlist with last year's one: the two abituées, ever present are Hazard and Suarez.

Last year Gareth Bale walked away with the coveted prize. In so doing, the Welshman was inducted into the prestigious club of players who have made the"double", also winning the Young Player of the Year Award.
But let's have a better look at the team that's impressing everyone: Liverpool.
Steven Gerrard, the team's captain, is the only player on the list who has already won the title (back in 2005-2006).
All eyes are now on Suárez, who has never won this prize and is experiencing what is probably the best season of his career.Thanks to his majestic goal tally, he might very well yet lead Liverpool towards a historical win of the Premier League.

In Liverpool's history, 5 players have already won this prize. The most interesting fact is that every time a Red received the award, Liverpool won a trophy:

-1979-1980: Terry McDermott/ First Division and Community Shield;
-1982-1983:Kenny Dalglish/ First Division, League Cup and Community Shield;
-1983-1984:Ian Rush/ First Division, League Cup and European Cup
-1987-1988: John Barnes/ First Division

Could it be that history might repeat itself for the South American player and for the Merseyside club? My bet is that there are innumerable fans out there hoping that this is what is in the stars for Liverpool.
